District Attorney Charles E. Branson was first elected as District Attorney of the 7th Judicial District on November 2, 2004 and took office January 10, 2005. Since then Charles has been re-elected without opposition in 2008 and 2012.
A tireless champion for the community, Charles brings simple Kansas values to public office. “If you do what is right, fair and just, you should never have trouble explaining your decision.”
In his early career he served the Douglas County Bar Association as its Vice President and then President of the Young Lawyers Section. He went on to hold the positions of Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, President and sat on its Board of Directors from 2006-2011. He served the Judge Hugh Means American Inn of Courts as a Reporter, Treasurer and Counselor. Charles currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association and maintains active memberships with the National District Attorneys Association and the American Bar Association.
A lifelong Kansan born and raised in Hutchinson, he graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate from the School of Law. Charles began his legal career in 1995 as a solo practioner in Lawrence where he handled criminal, domestic and civil litigation.
A 2007 graduate of Leadership Lawrence and a 2008 graduate of Leadership Kansas, Charles has been actively engaged in his community. He and his wife was the 2015-2016 Annual Campaign Chair for the United Way of Douglas County. He previously served on UW’s Allocations Committee and was the 2013 Leadership Givers Chair. He has served many other local nonprofits through board memberships or planning committees, including: VanGo, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Juneteenth Celebration and Douglas County Senior Services.
Charles and his wife Kathy, an administrator at Lawrence West Middle School and their children Chance and Grace are proud to call Lawrence and Douglas County their home.
